Who is this event for? Members of the public are welcome, particularly relevant for medical students.

Join co-founders of Surviving in Scrubs and a panel of former medical students & EDI Leads discussing the culture of misogyny in healthcare.

The Anti- Sexism campaign was co-created by students and staff, working together to raise awareness of the systemic sexism happening in medical education. Medical students of all genders are invited to join us on 09/02/23 for an evening of discussion featuring our special guests and premiering our short film.

In a recent BMA study, it was found that 91% of respondents had experienced sexism in the workplace within the last two years. This shocking statistic prompted three of our previous 5th Year medical students, Freya Webb, Kate Gibbons and Nina El-Ahwany, to write to the BMJ urging for the sexism targeted at student doctors to be recognised too. They will open the evening.

Speakers:

Dr Becky Cox and Dr Chelcie Jewitt founded the national Surviving in Scrubs campaign to advocate and campaign to end the culture of misogyny in healthcare. Becky is a GP specialist in gynaecology and an academic GP with an interest in violence against women. Chelcie is an Emergency Medicine trainee, interested in health inequalities for women.

Banji Adewumi is the University of Manchester Director of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and previously worked in the NHS.

Professor Tony Heagerty is Head of the School of Medical Sciences, which includes the medical school, and is an honorary consultant at Manchester Royal Infirmary.

Dr Chanelle Smith is a junior doctor and an advocate for fair treatment of BAME women in healthcare internationally.

The panel discussion will also include students from the EDI committee, Prof Margaret Kingston, Prof Rachel Cowen and other members of senior staff.

You will have the opportunity to ask questions and voice your ideas and opinions. During the refreshments you will be able to approach other students, staff and guests less formally. We hope the evening will leave you feeling inspired and striving for change. Attendance certification for portfolio will be available.
